PEOPLE I TRUST TO CUT MY HAIR

The assignment was to make a zine of five portraits of people that are related to you in some way, using black and white photos. I chose to do people I trust to cut my hair because on the surface it may seem simple, but there is a certain level of trust given to someone that cuts my hair. There is a special relationship with a man and his barber, and I allowed my booklet to expand on that. Getting a haircut is more than an errand, it’s about relationships. This project I think reflects my personality, as I was able to incorporate film photography, enjoy getting my hair cut, as well as have genuine deep conversations with people that mean a lot to me.

The questions I asked each person reflected the relational nature of the project by asking what their favorite story was to tell, how do they define a meaningful relationship, in one word how do they feel after having a meaningful conversation, and etc.

The film photos reflect the rawness and genuineness of a great conversation. And serve as an encouragement to live in the moment and to cultivate meaningful friendships. I also asked each person to draw a small self portrait of themselves to give a very personal aspect to the book.
